Sleep next to someone that keeps you awake because of how loudly they snore? Wake up and have slept many hours but still feel tired? You and your loved one could have a condition called Sleep Apnea. Apnea is the medical term for absence of breathing. There are two types of Apnea. Obstructive and Central . Central apnea should be investigated by a neurologist . Obstructive sleep apnea can occur for multiple reasons and is basically an obstruction of your airway passage. This is what the sound of snoring comes from. When awake we do not hear healthy people breathing. That is because the airway is open. During sleep, the position of our head, tongue and airway can cause an obstruction.

The airway muscles become relaxed and collapse a bit. People who take sedatives and sleeping aides compound this problem as they are chemically made more relaxed. If you suspect you may have sleep apnea please see your physician and discuss this concern.  The doctor can give you a prescription for a sleep study to be performed.

The reason you do not want to just ignore it , is this. When you are not breathing you are depriving your heart, brain , kidneys and all vital organs of oxygen. You may not notice health changes like heart damage or kidney damage until it is too late and permanent damage has occurred.
